Teaching
Introduction to Whitewater Kayaking

We start on dry land and introduce students to kayaking gear and concepts.  Here we begin to emphasize safety as the most important aspect of kayaking.

We then move to a flat water environment such as a lake or calm section of a river where we begin to introduce and practice basic kayaking skills such as Wet Exit, Basic Paddle Strokes, Body Position and Balance.  After mastering basic skills the student can progress to the next level: Beginner Kayaking Skills.

Beginner Kayaking Skills

Here we move from flat calm water to easy moving water sections of a river, Low Class II Whitewater. We begin to introduce the student to concepts and skills of kayaking in moving water such as eddys, eddy lines, edge control, and direction control.  We continue to expand on safety concepts and skills.  After mastering these fundamental skills the student can progress into Novice Kayaking Skills.

Novice Kayaking Skills

The Novice Kayaker can enjoy Low Class II rapids and begins to learn and practice more complex kayaking skills such as ferries, eddy turns, and the Eskimo Roll.  At this level we introduce concepts of river features such as waves and holes and begin to practice the skills for navigating these features.  After mastering Novice level skills, the student can move into the Intermediate Level.

Intermediate Level

Intermediate Level kayakers can enjoy a wide variety of river kayaking experiences.  Intermediate kayakers can progress into Class III Whitewater.  At this level, fundamental skill are practiced and refined.  Here we introduce concepts such as water reading, strategy for running a rapid, and group teamwork for river running.  The student at this level should have a good flat water roll and begin working on actual combat rolls in moving rapids.  The Intermediate kayaker can begin to work on more specialized skills such as play boating, creeking, or big water river running.  The Intermediate kayaker can participate in various kayaking activities and competitions.
